EVALUATION OF BOILER PARTIAL HOPPER EVACUATION SYSTEM AT PLEYSTOWE MILL
By PAUL STUART
A PARTIAL hopper evacuation system was evaluated on Pleystowe Mill No.2
boiler in the 2006 season. With positive results, a full hopper evacuation system
was retrofitted to Pleystowe Mill’s No.2 boiler in time for the 2007 crush season.
Results in the 2007 season were positive. The fully installed system included
evenly distributed air extraction from a dry multi-cyclone dust collector, ducting
extracted flue gas to a small wet scrubber, extraction fan, and return flue gas
ducting. This paper addresses the genesis, design philosophy, and
implementation of this installation and proposes that for other boilers, similar
retrofit installations could achieve reductions in emissions without a full wet
scrubber installation.
