SINCE 2008, A TEAM of scientists from Indonesia, Australia and France has been
conducting pest and disease surveys and researching moth borer control in sugarcane in
Java. As results from this ACIAR-funded research have become available, the extension
phase of the project has commenced. This paper describes the extension activities
undertaken as part of the project, including training workshops, ‘champion farmer’
activities and farmer field schools. Extension philosophy, strategies and outcomes are
also presented. The target audiences for these activities included farmers and plantation
staff. Other information was targeted at factory managers, mill directors and quarantine
staff. A field guide to pests and diseases in the Indonesian sugar industry produced as
part of the project is also described.
