VALIDATING THE ‘SIX EASY STEPS’ NITROGEN GUIDELINES IN THE WET TROPICS

THE SIX EASY STEPS nutrient management program has been recognised as part of the Australian sugar industry’s accepted best management practice (BMP) options. This paper evaluates the performance of the SIX EASY STEPS nitrogen (N) guidelines for sugarcane production in the wet tropics region in comparison to other N management strategies. Sugarcane yields and profitability can be maintained using the SIX EASY STEPS N guidelines, demonstrating sustainable sugarcane production is achievable in the wet tropics region. However if N rates are reduced below the levels indicated by the SIX EASY STEPS N guidelines grower and mill viability will be adversely affected.
