MAINTENANCE EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY

By

IN 2009 AN initial paper was presented to the ASSCT (Peppernell et al., 2009) reporting on the implementation of a change management strategy focusing on maintenance improvement. That paper reported on the implementation of the first three elements of a 5-point strategy. This paper builds on the initial work and covers the development and progression into stages 4 and 5 of the maintenance strategy. Stage 4 is maintenance effectiveness (doing the right maintenance at the right time) and stage 5 is maintenance efficiency (lowest cost maintenance for optimum effect). In particular, this paper examines the development, implementation and effectiveness of root cause failure analysis (RCFA), plant criticality analysis and reliability centred maintenance (RCM) as means of developing predictive and preventative maintenance programs.
