TWO ROLL MILL DEVELOPMENTS

By

THE BUNDABERG HIGH Extraction Mill (BHEM) is a two roll crushing mill in which the flows of bagasse and extracted juice are co-current in a vertical down geometry. The first commercial installation of a BHEM was at Bingera mill in 1997. Since then, the original Bingera BHEM has been replaced with a bigger unit and a further 12 units have been installed. As factories have increased their capacity, the BHEM concept has been further developed by retro-fitting pre-extraction rolls (PER) to the mills as a means of increasing their effective capacity. Again, the initial development work was done at Bingera mill. About half of all BHEMs now operate with PER units. A small BHEM has also been installed at Millaquin mill where it is used to dry stored bagasse reclaimed from stockpiles so as to improve the fuel value of the stored bagasse prior to combustion in the factory’s boilers. This paper describes these recent developments in BHEM technology.
