A long-serving member of the Australian sugar industry, the late Mr Denis Foster, has been honoured by the ASSCT.
 
The ASSCT’s Seymour Howe award for Chemistry has been renamed in Mr Foster’s honour to commemorate his 33 years’ valuable service to the Sugar Research Institute in Mackay, the ASSCT as Honorary General Secretary for 12 years and to the Australian and international sugar industries.
 
Mr Foster joined SRI as chief chemist in 1952 and was responsible for the elevation and recognition of the Chemistry Group to a very high standard. He made valuable contributions in the fields of crystallization, filtration, cane deterioration and harvesting, bagasse utilization together with many developments in analytical methods. In his career at SRI he was author of more than 75 technical publications.
